As part of your character’s background, you may choose one citizen of the town of Sandpoint to be your Connection. This person not only anchors your character to the story, but also provides some sort of boon or perk for your character throughout the campaign.
Below is a list of characters and their boons. (These are not links.)
Apothecary: Aliver Podiker (Human Alchemist)
Everyone suspects the sweaty, shifty-eyed apothecary sells poisons from his cluttered, acrid smelling wreck of a shop. You’re one of the few in town who know this for a fact. You start the game with 400 gp worth of poison, and the apothecary will continue to sell you poison as long as you don’t spread the word.
Tavern Owner: Ameiko Kaijitsu (Human Bard/Aristocrat)
One of the town’s most influential and beloved nobles. Her inn/tavern is the most popular in town, and as one of her friends, you’re guaranteed a place to eat and sleep for free. She’s got lots of great contacts with merchants as well, and she’ll sell any of your loot for you—as a result, you gain an additional 10% over the amount of gp you normally would get from selling off treasure.
Sherriff: Belor Hemlock (Human Barbarian)
The no nonsense arm of the law, is like the uncle you never had. The benefits of being close friends with the town sheriff are extensive, and you can call in favors from him once per game session. A favor can either get you out of a legal jam, hook you up with a town guard for help, or give you a one-time +10 bonus on a Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate check made against any local person.
Sage/Historian: Brodert Quink (Human Adept)
A rather crotchety and unlikeable old coot, this man is likely the leading expert on Thassilonian History in the world. Sadly his theories are unpopular, mostly because of how unpleasant he is. He owns a small library of very significant Thassilonian histories. As your mentor, he will talk to you without making an appointment for some time a week in the future in hopes you will go away. You gain a +2 bonus on Knowledge (History) checks and it is a Class Skill for your Character.
Mayor: Kendra Deverin (Human Aristocrat)
She has served as Sandpoint’s mayor since the tragic events of the Late Unpleasantness. Lawmaker, judge, and general peacemaker, she has proven to be both an adept diplomat and stern hand when need be. With a personal—some say sisterly—style of governing, most of Sandpoint’s citizens hold deep respect for their fiery-haired mayor. You gain a +1 bonus to Appraise and Diplomacy, and one of them is considered a class skill for you.
Bounty Hunter: Shalelu Andosana (Elf Ranger)
An elven woman who wanders the local region engaged in a never ending – self proclaimed war against the local goblin tribes. She comes into town once a month in order to supply the Sheriff and the Mayor with a report on the state of the outlying farms and wilderness. This report includes any suspicious characters or bandits she might have seen. Nearly every family in the farming community outside of Sandpoint has at some time had reason to be thankful for Shalelu’s watchful eye. You gain a +1 bonus to Survival and Geography checks while in Varisia, and Survival is considered a class skill for your character.
High Priest (Former): Ezakien Tobyn (Human Cleric)
Former Cleric of the Town Cathedral, he tragically burned to death in a fire that claimed not only his life, but the life of his daughter. He was a pillar of the community, stern at times, but well loved by his flock. He taught the catechism of his faith for decades, and many clerics of Desna throughout Varisa were his students or read from scrolls copied of his teachings. You gain a +1 bonus to both Heal and Knowledge (Religion) and you may choose one to be considered a class skill for you.
Local Orphan: Tsuto Kaijitsu (Half-Elf Monk/Rogue)
The unlucky half elf son of the Kaijitsu clan was thrown out of his home and raised in an orphanage. His older sister tried to help ease the hurt, but eventually it became too much and they fought. It is possible that any Character who is an orphan could have been raised with Tsuto and be considered a friend, or at least an acquaintance. You gain a +1 bonus to Bluff and Sleight of Hand, and one of these is considered a class skill for you.
Fortune Teller: Madame Mvashti (Human Cleric)
Already getting on in years when the town was founded, she was given a large manor house in the center of town to be her home until she passed away. Seemingly just to spite the Town Council, she hangs on to life and is still quite spry and chipper, even though she must be getting close to 100 years of age. She is well respected by the Varasian Gypsies and most of the common townsfolk. They are also mostly afraid of her and she is suspected of being a witch. You gain a +1 bonus to Knowledge (History) and (Arcana) and one of them is considered a class skill for you. Also, once a week, you may attempt to persuade her to perform a harrow reading to discern your future.
